Trowel

Of all of the gardening tools out there, the garden trowel is likely the most often used and thus the most important. Whether it's is planting, weeding, or harvesting time, the trowel can be extremely useful. It can be used to dig small or even large holes to plant seedlings. Can root out those extremely stubborn weeds. It can even assist in harvesting root crops. Whenever I am working in the garden, I always have my trowel within arm's reach. A Hori-Hori knife is another great option, as it has all the advantages of a regular trowel, however, the measuring marks allow you to accurately dig to the right planting depth.

Spading Fork

A spading fork, or garden fork , is another regularly used tool. It is great for breaking up hard-packed earth. If used carefully, you can even use it to harvest potatoes. If you live where heavy snows fall this tool is excellent at loosening the soil after the snows compacted it. In the spring, this is the first tool I reach for, as I know the ground needs to be fluffed up after sitting under heavy snow for months.

Weeder

Though a trowel can certainly be used for weeding. Using a weeder makes the job that much easier, as it is designed to lift the plant and root. These come in a variety of designs. The hand weeder is perfect for those smaller weeds that don't require a lot of work to get out. However, for those larger more stubborn weeds, a stand-up weeder is ideal.

Pruning Shears

Sooner or later, something in the garden will need pruning. Pruning trees and bushes help to keep them healthy, promote growth, and can remove diseased or damaged areas. Small pruning shears are perfect for bushes and smaller trees. However, if you have large trees that need regular pruning it will be a good idea to invest in loppers .

Bow Rake

Some gardeners are quite content to stick their hands in the dirt without gloves. I do this quite often. However, a pair of garden gloves is always a good idea. These come in handy when dealing with prickly, thorny, or poisonous plants that you would not want to touch with bare hands.

Wheelbarrow

Whether your garden is big or small, a wheelbarrow can come in handy. Great for moving mulch, mixing soil, carrying the harvest, or those recently pulled weeds. I went many years without a wheelbarrow and let me tell you, getting one made a world of difference. Now I can easily tackle all of my gardening tasks and when I'm done it allows me to quickly carry all of my tools to the shed for cleanup. Alternatively, a garden cart is also useful, doing an equal job to a wheelbarrow.
